You Are Your Worst Critic (Tip of the Month)

I’ve been having one of those weeks where I’ve really been beating myself up. One of those times when I just hate all my photos. I pick out all the flaws, and put myself down, wishing I was better. My mom ended up telling me “You are your worst critic.”
I ended up tuning in to a Creative Live session with Jasmine Star, and one quote she mentioned made my rethink my entire situation. She said “You may not like where you are but look how far you’ve come.” At that moment, I kind of thought “huh, you know what, she’s right. I have come far in my two years of professional shooting and since graduating, and studying photography books, I have grown as a photographer”. I also read a blog post from Just For You Photography that summed up my situation. It made me feel better knowing I’m not the only one who goes through these little episodes.
This week, I made myself sit down and go through my old photos and study them, and then also study the photos I’ve done recently. This is the BEST thing to do as a photographer, study your photos, pick out what was right, pick out what was wrong, and practice, practice, practice to make it better. Do this with other photographers work that you admire. Study their photos and ask yourself “why do I love this photo?” Pick out what you love and study WHY it works. The more you can observe and pick out and know WHY it was wrong or WHY it was right, will help you grow and get BETTER. Try it. You will be refreshed.
